Tonight, Barack Obama will deliver the final State of the Union address of his presidency and this time it’s shaping up to be a different. Check the RSVP request POTUS tweeted for his speech. The look on the president’s face let’s y’all know that this SOTU is but the latest stop on his No Fucks Given Tour and I am here for it.
If this doesn’t look like a damn flyer for the best grown-folks get together you’ll ever get invited to. This pic is giving me a resurrected Teddy Pendergrass performing alongside Luther in the front room while the Spinners and the O’Jays put it down in the back lounge type vibes.
The kind of party your 17-year-old prom-going self just knew you’d be going to all the time when you were grown. Before you settled for 10 cent wing happy hours at casual dining restaurants.
All of which got me to thinking: What should Barack be pouring on during the SOTU debrief/afterparty, and more importantly, what should I be sipping on while I watch what is sure to be an entertaining speech? I reached out to some of my favorite spirited ladies to get their take:
Lynn House, National Brand Educator for Heaven Hill Brands (Evan Williams, Elijah Craig, PAMA, Larceny, Rittenhouse) “You have got to be sipping something delicious and brown tonight. I suggest Henry McKenna 10yr old Single Barrel Bottle-in-Bond.
Tiffanie Barriere, liquid chef, tender of the bar and chief stirrer and mixer at Atlanta’s celebrated One Flew South. “Tonight should be rich and playful in the glass. I’m thinking Spanish wine, with whisky and a bit of bitters. Simple basic Manhattan BLACK POWER STYLE.”
Kara Newman, spirits editor for Wine Enthusiast and author of Cocktails For a Crowd: What would President Obama be enjoying? “It has to be American, bourbon or rye.”
Liza Weisstuch, cocktail, travel and food writer: “I’m drinking bubbly because that’s what I imagine Michelle and Barack want to be drinking to celebrate that they don’t have to deal with any of this ever again.”
So, what would you pour? Add your name to the roll call and let us know in the comments.
