Listen, we don’t advocate going on a four-year bender, but if ever there was a reason to contemplating life though the bottom of a glass, it was today. It has been a rough one, we can’t lie. And there’s still four more whole ass years to go. Sigh. For the ills of the country—or at least to help you get through the next few days— may we suggest this prescription:
Penicillin Cocktail
Created by Sam Ross
2 oz. blended Scotch whisky
¾ oz. fresh lemon juice
¾ oz. honey syrup*
¼ oz. Islay single malt Scotch whisky (we use Laphroaig 10)
a couple of decent-sized slices of fresh ginger
Muddle the ginger in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add blended whisky, lemon juice and honey syrup. Fill shaker with ice and hake vigorously. Strain into ice-filled rocks glass. Float the Islay on top. Garnish with candied ginger.
Repeat as needed.
* To make honey syrup, dissolve honey in an equal amount of hot water. Transfer to a sealable bottle, add a drop of vodka, and store in the refrigerator for a week or so.
