Bloody Great Blood Orange Cocktails

Blood oranges are in season and if you’ve been sleeping on them I’m here to tell you to wake up. The citrus fruit with the eye-popping crimson flesh isn’t just a looker—although just take a look—they somehow taste richer, deeper, sweeter than their paler cousins. I love using them in my favorite cocktails because it’s an easy way to add a pop of color to the drinks I already love.

The blood orange season runs from December to May so there’s still time for you get in on the fun. Read on for inspiration.

Blood Orange and Bourbon

Ingredients
  • 4 oz bourbon
  • .5 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 3 oz fresh blood orange juice
  • 2 oz simple syrup
  • 4 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Slices of blood orange for garnish
Directions
Step 1
Add all ingredients to cocktail shaker with ice.
Step 2
Shake vigorously and strain into glass over ice.
Step 3
Garnish with blood orange slices

Blood Orange Boulevardier

The brown liquor cousin to the Negroni gets a bit mellower with the addition of blood orange juice

Ingredients
  • 2 oz strong bourbon
  • 2 oz fresh blood orange juice
  • 2 oz sweet vermouth
  • 2 oz Campari
  • Angostura bitters
  • Blood orange slice for garnish
Directions
Step 1
In a mixing glass, stir ingredients together with cracked ice.
Step 2
Strain into chilled glass.
Step 3
Garnish with slice of blood orange

Bloody Good Thyme Tom Collins

Ingredients
  • 2 oz gin
  • 1¼ oz fresh blood orange juice
  • ¼ oz thyme simple syrup (dissolve ½ C sugar in ½ C water, then steeping 8 sprigs thyme in mixture for 10 minutes, discard sprigs and strain syrup)
  • Club soda
  • Blood orange wheel and thyme sprig for garnish
Directions
Step 1
Add gin, juice, and syrup to cocktail shaker
Step 2
Add ice and shake vigorously
Step 3
Strain into glass over ice
Step 4
Top with club soda and garnish with orange slice and sprig of thyme


Rum Sweet and Sour

Ingredients
  • 3 oz golden rum
  • 2 oz fresh lime juice
  • 2 oz fresh blood orange juice
  • 1 oz agave syrup
  • 2 egg whites
  • Blood orange wheel for garnish
Directions
Step 1
Add ingredients to cocktail shaker without
Step 2
Shake vigorously to froth the egg white
Step 3
Add ice and shake again
Step 4
Strain out ice and shake one last time
Step 5
Pour into glass and top with orange wheel
